Next Generation Internet Update
Progress is being made towards the implementation of New Zealand's first
Next Generation Internet network. In recent months NGI-NZ, now an
incorporated Society, has made significant steps towards the establishment
of a high-speed network for research, education and innovation in New
Zealand. It has conducted Request for Offer processes for the national and
international components of the network, held wide-reaching discussions
with prospective members, and engaged various Government groupings in
dialogue about funding and user needs.
"This extensive groundwork means we have the background knowledge and
framework for a quick implementation of the network," says Tone Borren,
NGI-NZ Chief Executive. The New Zealand Government is now looking at its
own funding policy for such a network through a multi-portfolio led
steering group. That group is expected to report on its findings before the
end of the year. NGI-NZ is helping the Government with its analysis and
the outcome of those deliberations will in turn help determine the costs
associated with access to the network. "The NGI-NZ Society has also been
asked by Government to ensure that its membership is inclusive," says Tone
Borren. "This is a current focus for the Society and we are confident we
will be able to demonstrate a wide range of member organisations with a
senior level of involvement from them."
